\nProcess safety is currently “hot” in companies and regulators.
\nIn recent years there have been several high-profile accidents, both local and abroad. This has caused more attention to process safety in the process industry.<\/p>\n

The definition of process safety:<\/strong>Process safety is safety in handling hazardous substances in process installations where the keys are engineering, design and protections<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It’s not work safety where the primarily concern are the workers, but how the technical equipment is designed and built according to specific guidelines.<\/p>\n

Process Safety and process accidents<\/h2>\n

\"ProcessTo demonstrate why process safety is so important in the process industry, here are some examples of process accidents.<\/p>\n

1975 DSM Geleen, explosion naphtha cracker 2. 14 deaths<\/h3>\n

1976: Seveso (Italy), escape of toxic gas<\/h3>\n

On July 10, 1976 exploded a TCP (2,4,5-trichlorophenol) reactor of the chemical company ICMESA in Meda, Italy. A toxic gas cloud with high concentrations of TCDD (a dioxin) escaped to the atmosphere. Downwind from the plant polluted the dioxin cloud a densely populated area of 6 km long and 1 km wide, which immediate killed many animals. The nearby village of Seveso was hit also, therefore, the accident was called the Seveso disaster.<\/p>\n

1984: Union Carbide (India), escape off toxic gas<\/h3>\n

Many residents of the city of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh county, India still remember well what happened on December 3, 1984. Shortly after midnight, a cloud of gas escaped from the pesticide plant of Union Carbide Ltd. (UCIL). The cloud contained 15 tons of methyl isocyanate (MIC), and covered an area of more than 30 square kilometers. Because of this gas leak about 4,000 residents were immediately killed, and between 50,000 and 500,000 persons suffer from symptoms such as pulmonary edema. In the following year after the disaster another 15,000 persons died. Currently, approximately 100,000 people suffer from health problems as a result of the gas cloud.<\/p>\n

1988: Occidental Petroleum Ltd Piper Alpha drilling platform (North Sea), explosion<\/h3>\n

On July 6, 1988 an explosion occurred at the Piper Alpha drilling platform of Occidental Petroleum Ltd. and Texaco in the North Sea. Piper Alpha was on the Piper Oilfield, about 190 km from Aberdeen in 144m deep water. During the explosion about 240 people were working on the platform. The explosion and fire that followed killed 167 of them immediately.<\/p>\n

2005: BP Refinery Texas City (USA), explosion<\/h3>\n

2005: Buncefield (UK), explosion. No casualties, a lot of damage and inconvenience.<\/h3>\n

2010: Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico<\/h3>\n

2011: Fire Chemie-Pack Moerdijk<\/h3>\n

Process accidents can cause major damage, casualties and negative publicity for the company. The consequences can be so great that the continuity \/ survival of the company may be seriously threatened. The consequences can lead to many deaths, injuries and extensive damage to the environment. As described above, such accidents can cause that people still die many years after the accident.<\/p>\n

Process safety has therefore become very important in our ever-growing chemical proecess industry and therefore important to be very carefull.<\/p>\n

In connecting with process safety Netherlands has created the BRZO, decree on risks of serious accidents.<\/a> which more particularly regulates the storage of hazardous substances.<\/p>\n
